Vols. 1-8 and the supplementary vol.9 are reissues of the Tonson 1728 edition, vol.1 with a cancel titlepage, and the titlepages of vols. 2-8 read: 'The works of Shakespear.'

"Reissue of the 9-volumes second edition [published by Tonson in 1728] with the addition of the Poems (and glossary) in the 10th vol. The earlier issue was in 8 volumes, with a supplementary 9th volume containing Pericles and other doubtful plays, and was published by Tonson et.al. Vol. 10 was intended to supplement the 1728 Tonson 8v. edition, or was issued as part of the 1728 Knapton 10v. edition. The imprint of volume 10 reads: "Printed for J. and J. Knapton, J. Darby, A. Bettesworth, F. Fayram, W. Mears, J. Pemberton, J. Osborn and T. Longman, B. Motte, J. Hooke, C. Rivington, F. Clay, and J. Batley, 1728."; Volume 10 has a different state of leaf A2, with the leaf misprinted as "A".
