The first leaf bears an "Advertisement" in which Settle denies that he wrote a second part of "The popish successour".

A reply to "The character of a papist in masquerade" by Roger L'Estrange and "The character of an honest man, whether styled Whig or Tory, and his opposite the knave" by a Lover of truth and peace.
