Part 2, "The loves of Mars & Venus" by Peter Motteux has separate dated title page, pagination, and register. According to its preface it "was written to be inserted into a very short farce written by Mr. Ravenscroft, called The Anatomist or the Sham Doctor"
The edition of "The loves of Mars & Venus" published with "The Anatomist" is a reissue of 1696 edition (Wing M2954) with the following alterations: the first 2 lines and the last 2 lines of the title page have been reset; the prologue and epilogue, which were on leaf b1r, hav been omitted since they appear in the preliminaries of "The anatomist" (*a1v-*a2r); the balance of the preliminaries are imposed differently: A1 (title page) is a single leaf, the original A2 and a1 are now a gathering signed a, and the original a2 and b2 are now a gathering signed B. In the 1697 reissue of "The loves of Mars & Venus" (Wing M2955) the preliminaries are identical to those described here, and it too may have been issued with "The anatomist".
- Uncontrolled note
- BEWARE: In another earlier edition or issue the signatures for "The anatomist" lack asterisks. VERIFY whether this is another setting of type or a reissue with asterisks added. In the non-asterisk edition the name of the actor playing "Young Mr Gerald" in the Dramatis Persona is given in error as "Mr Hodson" in place of "Hodgson". DFo copy lacks asterisk only in quire a, which does have "Mr Hodson" in the Dramatis Personae. VERIFY edition exists completely lacking asterisks. Because of the differences in the preliminaries of "The loves of Mars & Venus" when issued as part of "The anatomist", it should be easy to determine whether single copies of the 1696 edition were issued separately or were intended to be part of the edition catalogued here
