The words "Eik=on basilik=e" on title page are in Greek characters

A reply to the memorandum by Anglesey and to "A true account of the author of a book entituled Eik=on basilik=e" by Anthony Walker (Wing W310)

The Anglesey memorandum, which supports the claim that John Gauden, and not Charles I, was the author of the "Eik=on", was printed on a singleton and added to some copies of the Amsterdam edition of John Milton's "Eikonoklast=es" (Wing M2115)

Includes a bibliography of the editions of "Eik=on basilik=e" published between 1648 and 1685 compiled by Samuel Keble. See Madan, F.F. New bibl. of the Eikon basilike, 153

Running title reads: A vindication of King Charles I. &c

Also issued as part of Wing P1596

Leaf G4 is cancelled. It bears a general title page for the 1697 collected edition of Richard Perrinchief's "The royal martyr: or, the life and death of King Charles I" (3rd ed. 1684), "Eik=on basilik=e" (1685), and Wagstaffe's "Vindication" (2nd ed. 1697). Apparently Hindmarsh acquired the unsold copies of the "Royal martyr" and "Eik=on" on the death of Royston and used this general title page, with title "The life and death of King Charles the First" for a reissue of those two works in combination with the second edition of his own "Vindication". See Madan, F.F. New bibl. of the Eikon basilike, 67, third issue, and Wing P1596

Identified as part of Wing P1596 on UMI microfilm "Early English books, 1641-1700" reel 1065.
Uncontrolled note
Verify that the O copy, filmed at reel 1065, contains Wagstaff'e "Vindication" plus the general t.p. only. If the O copy contains all 3 parts, it should be matched at Wing P1596 instead of here
