A reissue, with cancel title page, of the 1693 edition, with addition of "The maid's tragedy altered". Quire V is apparently reprinted from standing type; the last line of V6r is altered from "Finis" to "The end of the first part", and a catchword "The" is added to V8v
"The maid's tragedy altered. With some other pieces" has separate pagination, register, and title page with imprint "London, printed for Jacob Tonson ... 1690". This comes in two settings: B8v line 2 up has (1) "yon" or (2) "you"; C4v line 8 has (1) "rember" or (2) "remember" E8r last line has (1) "Tryumph" or (2) "Triumph". Setting 1 was probably also issued separately as Wing W502. Setting 2 was probably not printed until 1694 when the remainder of the first edition was exhausted
The prefatory note to "The maid's tragedy altered. With some other pieces" states, "Most of the following pieces, being unfinish'd, were never intended to be publish'd; but that a person, who had borrowed a manuscript copy of them, took upon him to print them. The copy from which they were printed, was very imperfect; and there being noe means left to suppress them, it was thought fit to suffer them to be more correctly printed from the last and truest copies." The edition referred to is the unauthorized edition of 1690 (Wing W521)
"The maid's tragedy altered" is a fragment, probably intended by Waller to form a new Act V, transforming Beaumont and Fletcher's tragedy into a comedy
Filmed copy at reel 1624 is imperfect. Black ink printing, including edition statement,is not visible as filmed and part 2 is lacking.
