"The first two stanzas were written originally by Thomas Shadwell for his opera Psyche, in 1675"--NUC pre-1956; Wing gives him as author, as well.

Bodleian Library ballads database suggests publication date "between 1672 and 1696"; Wing suggests "[1675]". Since Psyche is dated 1675, unlikely to have been printed earlier.
