- Originally published by William Rolland, the paper was taken over by the Ruddiman family in 1729. Paper and press were transfered to John Robertson in 1772, and in 1790, upon his retirement, to his friend Robert Allan. Cf. Plomer.

Printed by Thomas Ruddiman, sr., from 1724, later imprints read "Thomas Ruddiman and Company"; in <1759>: "Walter Ruddiman and Company"; in <1779>: "Printed for and by John Robertson"; from <1798- >: "Printed by Robert Allan", with added imprint on date line of p. [1]: "Edinburgh, printed by Robert Allan"; bookseller listed before 1730: Mr. Alex Symmers.
Format varies; originally printed in two columns, in 1725 the paper was issued as a single sheet in large quarto, from <1759> printed on two folio sheets, in <1779>; two full sheets in three columns, with a cut of Mercury holding a caduceus in center of title; from 7 Jan. 1786 the paper was printed in four columns.
Later issues have full page of advertisements, some illustrated with small cuts. Includes news stories reprinted from various London and Edinburgh papers, regional news, commodity prices, local advertisements and legal notices.
