COOTE (J.), bookseller and publisher in London, (1) King's Arms, opposite Devereux Court in the Strand; (2) King's Arms, Paternoster Row. 1757–74. A native of Horsham in Sussex. For many years in partnership with John Cooke (q. v.). In 1758 his name is found in the imprint to a pamphlet entitled The Folly of appointing Men of Parts to great Offices of State, a satire on Government officials. Coote was fond of dramatic composition and was the author of an opera and five farces. [Timperley, 1842, p. 834.] He is also found publishing the Royal Magazine in 1765. [Gazetter and Daily Advertiser, August 1st.] On June 5th, 1774, among "Dividends to Creditors" is one promised for "John Coote, late of Paternoster Row, Bookseller." Presumably he went bankrupt the previous year and retired. He died on October 29th, 1808. [Nichols, III. 719.]
