Samuel Derrick, trained as a linen draper, a failed actor, and an author, thought to be the original compiler of Harris's List of Covent Garden Ladies, a directory of London prostitutes beginning in 1760 and named for Jack Harris, waiter at Shakespeare's Tavern and self-titled "Pimp-General to the People of England."
