Ignatius Sancho tobacco paper / trade card (back)
ca. 1774-1780
British Museum D,2.3877
“The wish,” tobacco-paper for Sancho's Best Trinidado tobacco, sold at No. 19 Charles Street, Westminster. In this image a European trader shakes hands with a Native American. Each has placed his foot on a shield, which the European has speared. On the shield is the fleur-de-lis of France, suggesting that Sancho's nationalistic and commercial “wish” is for British capture of the Spanish colony with its large population of French settlers. The two men are surrounded by images of the shipping trade: to the left are boxes addressed to Sancho's shop in Westminster, a tobacco hogshead, an anchor, and a pulley; to right and behind them are ships' sails and masts.
